WATER GATE TUNNEL WHERE TIPU SULTAN WAS MARTYRED

This is the Water gate tunnel where Sultan and his few Soldiers fought hand to hand with British forces as a last stand.

This tunnel you see in the picture has a door at the end which  was closed from inside by Mir Nadim (traitor) the killedar of Srirangapatna Fort and the soldiers inside of the Fort did not know that Tipu Sultan himself was fighting with his handful of soldiers at the end of this tunnel.

Here is the picture of the same tunnel of water gate from other side

Tipu sultan and his soldiers fought here against more than 3000 British soldiers of East India company consisting of two coloumn's

One column of British infantry came from the inner ramparts from the breach and the second reinforcement division of David baird came from outer ramparts crossing the ditch or outer moat which separates the fort wall and hidden passage way.

The battle here was so severe that at the end of the day when Britishers came here to search the body of Tipu Sultan,
They found more than 2000 dead and dying people and bodies here. in the whole Srirangapatna fort more than 11,000 people died that day.

It's not just 11,000 soldiers and people
More than 11,000 families lost their loved ones, that day.
Thousands of children became orphans
Thousands of women became widows
Hundreds of houses were looted.

The pain endured by the inhabitants of Srirangapatna that fateful day of May 4 1799 cannot be written in words.

Many Inaccurate Paintings were made of this Watergate and the fall of Tipu Sultan after the war by many artists who never actually visited the Actual place which led to confusion that there was one more gate in inner part of fort which is wrong, because there is only one water gate tunnel and it is here at this exact spot Tipu sultan stood like a Shield protecting the innocent people of his country till his last breath
And he died was Martyred at this Northern end of Watergate as a Hero.
