The Hazrat Tawakkal Mastan RA Dargah in Bengaluru is one of the city’s most important Sufi shrines and a symbol of religious harmony that has stood the test of time. History of Hazrat Tawakkal Mastan RA Dargah

The origins of the dargah go back to the 18th century during the reign of Hyder Ali, the ruler of Mysore. Hazrat Tawakkal Mastan, along with Hazrat Tipu Mastan and Hazrat Manik Mastan, worked on the construction of the Kalasipalya Fort. These saints were not ordinary labourers but men of deep spirituality and Sufi discipline. After the fort was completed, Hyder Ali offered to pay them for their work, but they refused any wages. Instead, they requested that a mosque be built in the area so that it could serve as a place of worship and spiritual guidance for future generations.

Hyder Ali accepted their request and began the construction, which was later completed in 1783 under the rule of Hazrat Tipu Sultan. Hazrat Tawakkal Mastan, a saint belonging to the Suharwardia order and a disciple of the great Sufi Baba Fakruddin of Penukonda, spent his last years here in deep devotion, and this tomb became a place of reverence for all who knew his piety and miracles. Over time, the site grew into a well-known dargah that welcomed people from all walks of life.


Role in Religious Harmony

One of the most remarkable aspects of Hazrat Tawakkal Mastan RA Dargah is the way it has served as a bridge between different communities. The shrine is closely connected to Bengaluru’s famous Karaga festival, a centuries-old Hindu tradition. Every year before the Karaga procession begins, the Karaga bearer, dressed in traditional attire, visits the dargah to receive blessings. The Karaga bearer and the dargah’s priest exchange a lemon, a symbolic act that represents trust, unity, and respect between communities. This practice has been followed for hundreds of years and continues to this day, drawing attention to Bengaluru’s unique spirit of coexistence.
